β€œ I am the Dreamer. When doom approaches, I will meet it halfway. I will protect the people, their lives, and their freedom. I will protect their dreams. ”
    β€” Nia Nal[src]

Nia Nal is a reporter at CatCo Worldwide Media. Nal is also the daughter of Paul and Isabel Nal, the sister of Maeve Nal and the ancestor of Nura Nal.

Born as a Human-Naltorian hybrid, Nal was gifted with exceptional abilities and was able to draw power from the Dreaming. She grew up and slowly discovered her gifts while working with the Super Friends, becoming the vigilante known as the Dreamer.

    Biography[edit | hide | hide all]

    Early Life[edit | hide]

β€œ My powers are passed down from mother to daughter, but my mom died before she could teach me how to use them. ”
    β€” Nia Nal[src]

Nia Nal was born to Isabel Nal and Paul Nal and inherited Naltorian powers from her mother.[2] She always knew she was transgender, her parents helped her be her authentic self and transition young. Growing up transgender, Nal has had a history of being discriminated against for her identity. Game night was a stable in her family. [12]

    Interning at CatCo[edit | hide]

While she tends to have a history of being punctual, Nal was late to her first day at CatCo where she then rambled to Kara about her troubles only to then realize the person she was talking to was the same person she was working under the wing of as an intern. She then introduced herself to her, and offered her coffee to make a good first impression. She was then comforted by Kara who saw her as being similar to her before going into a meeting together. [13]

For Nal's first assignment, she wanted to work on a feature on National City's fashion district. After Kara viewed it as something that is something slight rather than something more. She then elaborated on it not being slight, which impressed Kara, and she then elaborated about the middle of East City being a hothead of crime now changing to be infused with color and life, and that her article is one about community, growth, and hope. Kara told her to pitch the article in this exact way to Olsen. However, later when Mackenzie pitched her fashion idea before her, she shied away from speaking up. Nal later confided in Kara about being unable to speak up as she was intimidated by Olsen being CEO as well as MacKenzie's connections and was afraid of speaking up as a result. [13]

Nal was asking Olsen if, as editor-in-chief of CatCo, he was going to write an editorial on where the paper stands regarding the issue of the president being an alien. He responded that they're focused on the facts for now. Later that day she fell asleep on her desk, and after being woken up she went out to get coffee. After asking for espressos, she waited in line. While doing so, she witnessed Querl Dox's image inducer device glitch and the store owner not only turning on him but bringing out his employees to physically assault him. She stood up for him by standing in between Dox and the attackers then afterward telling him she'll be reporting on the cruelty they displayed at CatCo before demanding he give Dox the pizzas and walking him out. Dox asked her if she wanted to get to know him and she told him her name, stating that if he truly wants to find him he will. [12]

Back at CatCo, Nal went into Olsen's office to tell him about what happened. Olsen told her they've been getting a lot of calls like that and awareness is important. She uses this to bring up her idea from earlier regarding the editor-in-chief making a statement about the attacks. When he noticed she's quite passionate about this, Olsen sat next to her and asked her to speak her mind. Nal proceeded to come out as transgender, having been attacked and denied because of who she is. She proceeded to state that she felt the responsibility to stand up and make a difference, by holding a mirror to a bully's face before asking him to hold a mirror to the entire city; as the only way to survive would be by truly seeing each other. Olsen thanked her for sharing her truth and her passion, but said that the readers who share the values already know the truth but don't want to editorialize out of fear of being biased. Nal finished the conversation stating that when innocent people are being attacked, it's not about balance, it's about justice. [12]

That night, MacKenzie bullied Franklin for being an alien and so Olsen confronted her, to which she apologized. Afterward, he told the newsroom that he won't be tolerating hate within the walls or on the pages and that it is their duty as journalists is to expose the truth. Nal having been there, mouthed a thank-you. [12] When Supergirl had fallen, and it was all over the news, Nal proceeded to ask Olsen not to be Guardian again after having woken up from a nap. She proceeded to state that she read that one can be prosecuted for multiple instances of the same crime. Olsen pointed out his confusion as she earlier asked him to act, Nal pointed out that she is aware of not sounding like herself but in this instance something bad is likely to happen, she senses. He then responded to her that heroes go out there even when they know something bad is going to happen.

The following morning, when there was an attack at a city fair, Olsen walked out, nodding at Nal as he left to suit up as Guardian. Later that day, Nal came to Olsen showing him that even though there was no indictment, a far right anti-alien hate group is using his appearance fighting villainous aliens at the fair as if Guardian is an anti-alien vigilante on their side.[14]

Making it to Kara's rooftop brunch, Nal met Alex, J'onn, and Lena. Olsen congratulated Kara for landing an interview with Amadei Derros. Confused, Nal asked who he is to which Olsen responded that he is an alien healer. Kara asked Nal if she would like to join the interview with her tomorrow and she said she'd love to. Afterward, Alex brought Querl Dox having previously been passed out and Nal instantly recognized him from the coffee place. While she fixed her hair as he talked, she softly smiled with Dox instantly recognized her as Nia Nal. Kara was surprised they know each other, Nal told her they met once at a pizza place and proceeded to point out that Dox never found her. He then proceeded to state her address, her phone number, and her habits with Bob's Diner orders. Alex interrupted him, stopping him from embarrassing himself, as he's not as stalkers as that came out as. Nal laughed and asked why he didn't call her, and he said she told him to find her not call her, everyone laughed afterward before Kara made a toast.

The next day, Nal joined Kara for the interview with Amadei Derros and afterward laughed with her at the nice comments they were receiving on the article. While doing so though, Kara's attention was drawn to the hateful comments piling up calling aliens slurs, threatening to kill hem. Nal comforted Kara as she felt that instead of bringing people together, it made him a target for them. Later that day, he was attacked, which made Kara feel guilty as her article was focused only on all the good. After the super friends fixed things, Kara told Nal she decided to continue the series of articles telling stories of aliens [15]

The day before Thanksgiving, Nia Nal was asleep on her desk and was awoken by Kara & Olsen. She woke up apologizing, Olsen said no worries as she does great work when she's awake. Nal now wanting to reveal her powers, claimed to have a sleep illness that causes one to fall asleep at random times. When Olsen asked if it was narcolepsy to which she played along with, Kara said it's a serious illness and asked if she found a doctor. Nal said she already met one in DC, and thanked Kara for offering help. Nal later joined Kara to help her prepare for the debate with Ben Lockwood. While rehearsing, Nal fell asleep on the couch. Kara woke her up, stating with great concern that she needs to get help for her sleep problem. She then invited her to her place for Thanksgiving as her mom will be there, being a doctor likely to know others as well. Before Nal could respond, they were interrupted with the interview being time to start, she then got up and gave Kara a motivational pep talk, complimenting her hair. Kara was touched by her display of mentorship before the debate, then proceeded to go inside. [16]

The next day on Thanksgiving, Nal was present at Kara's place. She opened the door for Dox, joking β€œwell if it isn't my stalker” to which he then responded the flowers he was holding are for Kara. While she was helping Eliza with Thanksgiving dinner, Eliza recommended a doctor for her narcolepsy. Nal responded that she already found a doctor here, she proceeded to say Doctor Smith; Eliza asked if it was Jane Smith and Nal responded it was Minsky. Eliza was confused, having never heard of him, Nal then continued to say he's new. Nal and the other guests sat together while they debated on Lena's argument that humans should be able to have the same powers as aliens before they all gathered together for dinner. While serving the food, they all discussed the children of liberty. Nal stated it seems scarier that they have trained dogs to identify aliens. Olsen pointed out the guy he met had a dog with him, which led to them realizing that the Children of Liberty intended on attacking aliens in their homes at sunset. Thanksgiving was broken up as Manchester, Kara, Alex, Olsen, and Dox left in order to fight the Children of Liberty. [16]

    Becoming Dreamer[edit | hide]

Nal had a dream where she woke up from the couch at night, to see a loud news report playing. Then, she saw a blurry woman being shot by Agent Liberty. She woke up from the dream to find it daytime. Her roommate was watching her saying she sleeps weird, and Nal scolded her for letting her sleep despite asking her otherwise. Later at work, she hurriedly ran to the elevator, where she bumped into Olsen. He jokingly if she's stockpiling for the great coffee war, referencing her holding three coffee cups, noticing her having three coffee cups with her. Nal responded they're for her friends. Kara then also hurriedly ran to the elevator, bumping into her & Olsen, then asking Nal about the coffee cups. Olsen reiterated they're for friends.

As the three of them arrived at the floor, Nal saw a vision of a Children of Liberty agent and dropped the coffee cups. Kara quickly picked them up. Olsen asked Nal if she's okay, she responded that she's fine and walked away. Kara stopped her, confronting her about her telling different people inconsistent versions of the narcolepsy story and panicked about seeing the Agent of Liberty on television. Nal responded that it was a nightmare she had, cutting herself off as Kara says she's worried about her. [17]

Taking Nal by surprise, Kara arrived at her apartment saying she wants to help. Nal then invited Kara in. Nal told Kara about her planet, being from Naltor. She also told her about how once in a generation some women get a genetic oneiromancy where they can dream the future. She told Kara about the dream from earlier where she saw Agent Liberty about to murder a woman. When Kara offered to bring someone else to help her out, Nal accepted. Kara invited Querl Dox in, who proceeded to tell Nal about her powers, accidentally calling her Nura at one point. Kara & Dox continued to guide Nal from her dream, and proceed to unblur the woman. Nal realized she knows where she can find her, and they took to the streets where they had a run-in with the Children of Liberty. The three of them were kidnapped by the Children of Liberty, Nal was panicking and when Kara used a Lois Lane method to calm her down, Nal didn't recognize Lois's name.

Things quickly escalated when some of the Children of Liberty henchpeople tried killing them and Nal used her ability to dream the future to her advantage by using a bad guy's bullet to break herself free. They quickly discovered that the factory they were taken to was previously owned by Ben Lockwood. Kara called Alex, and they figured out that Agent Liberty is in fact Ben Lockwood. Kara went out in order to find him. Staying at the factory, Nal realized it is the same place from her dreams and Dox helped her decipher her dream better afterward. Nal used the hook at the factory to prevent the death of Lydia Lockwood from the dream. Ben Lockwood was arrested thanks to their investigation, and outed to the world as Agent Liberty. Nal went to sleep peacefully after the events of the day. [17]

While at work, Nal received a call from Dox asking her out to a restaurant. When Nal arrived, she found that she was overdressed as it wasn't a date but rather a meeting as Dox wanted to discuss her powers. Dox was surprised she's interested in him, to which she responded she isn't sure she is interested in him. Afterward regarding her abilities, she said the altercation with the Children of Liberty was only a one-time thing. Dox proceeded to tell her that he once didn't want the responsibilities or the burdens of superheroes at first but had to take them up. He then received a phone call, and had to leave. Before doing so, he gave her a binder of costume & name ideas. Later after the meeting, Nal was looking through the binder and received a call from her sister about their mom's birthday. [18]

At Kara's place for game night, Nal was asked where she's from and told Lena she's from Parthas and that she's going back there this weekend for a harvest fest. The next day, she was apologizing to Maeve for being unable to go to Parthas that weekend. Maeve accused her of being irresponsible, then Nal said all the flights were canceled. Kara, overhearing this conversation, offered to drive Nal there and also write an article about it as it's a beacon of tolerance. On their way there, Nal told Kara about her mother coming to Earth and came out to Kara as transgender. After Kara thanked her for sharing her story, Nal asked her not to mention her powers to her family because she hasn't told them yet. Having fallen asleep in the car ride, Nal had a dream of her mother brushing her hair in a meadow. She had a mirror in front of her with a spider on it. In the dreams, her mother then drank from a glass bottle and crumbled. A crow flew away and Nal woke up. [19]

Crisis on Infinite Earths[edit | hide]

Nal and 3 billion people evacuated Earth-38 on alien spacecrafts and eventually made it to Earth-1, only later to be killed by Antimatter along with the rest of the people on Earth-1. She was later recreated along with many others after the Spectre and the Paragons created the new multiverse. However, she didn't have her memories from the original multiverse at first. Waiting for Kara at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony, she called her as the lady from the Gazette was giving her the angry eyes. After Kara returned, Lex Luthor was announced as the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Nal, without her Pre-Crisis memories and thus ignorant to his being a terrorist in the Original Multiverse, celebrated this with applause. Later though, she got her Pre-Crisis memories from J'onn J'onzz, and she then joined the fight alongside other heroes against the Anti-Monitor. [20]

    Relationship with Brainy[edit | hide]

    Brainiac-5s of the Multiverse[edit | hide]

Weeks after the Crisis, Nal and Dox went for a walk at the shore and met other versions of Dox. Nal and them later arrived at the DEO headquarters and found out more of them were in the facility. Nal then worked with multiple versions of them and was attacked by the Dox who attempted to restore his Earth on Earth-Prime. Nal was then rescued by Dox-Prime and was sent to the med lab for further recovery.[21]

During the battle, Nal returned to the field as Dreamer and fought against the three Kryptonian witches. When Dox-Prime was injured during the battle, Nal comforted him and convinced him to disable his Personality Inhibitors. Dox then removed them and reverted to his true form.[21]

After the fight, Dox went to Nal's apartment and talked to her. He then surprised her and broke up with her in order for him to actually understand his feelings. Not knowing it was a way to defeat Lex Luthor and Leviathan, Nal accepted the break-up and let Dox leave the apartment.[21]

    Wildcat Dreams[edit | hide]

When Nal started using her powers in order to find the rogue Toyman, she started having dreams of wildcats, a nickname she gave to Dox during their relationship. She was then overwhelmed by Dox's presence in the Tower and went out to the balcony. Winn Schott then approached her and told her about the future of her descendants, as well as giving her advice to overcome the relationship.[22]

Nal and Schott then left to the battle. Schott then fought a tiger robot using his Oneiric Energy Legion Ring. Nal was fascinated by what her powers could actually do and continued the battle.[22]

    Anti-Transgender Hate Crimes[edit | hide]

    Nal attacks Gregory Bauer

After her roommate, Yvette Turner, was attacked by an anti-transgender hate group member, Nal attempted to kill the criminal for justice by luring her out using dating apps. Despite Supergirl's multiple attempts to convince her otherwise, Nal continued her plan and was able to locate Bauer's whereabouts. Nal then attacked him using her powers, only to be stopped by Supergirl and brought Bauer to justice.[23]

Leviathan and Lex Luthor[edit | hide]

During Leviathan and Luthor's attempt to kill Supergirl, Nal fought against both of them and continuously had dreams of Dox laughing on the Leviathan Ship. During the battle, Nal was able to defeat several Leviathan members and realized that the dreams were in fact, flashes of Dox's death. As the offense team gets overwhelmed by Leviathan, they disappeared thanks to Dox. She then informed them and went to rescue Dox.[24]

Moments later, Nal went to the Leviathan Ship and attempted to rescue Dox. Dox then warned her about the radiation of the ship, which she ignored and damaged the security systems using astral projection. She quickly collapsed on the ground and the Super Friends arrived, with M'gann M'orzz brining Nal, Dox and Alex Danvers away from the radiation. Gamemnae was then defeated by Supergirl using a microchip containing the Anti-Life Equation.[25]

    No More Secrets[edit | hide]

Returning to the Tower, Nal and the team reunited with Lena Luthor. During the conversation, Nal had a dream of Luthor as the Anti-Monitor destroying planets. Nal later talked to Dox, who gave her his Legion Ring for "safekeeping", saying it might come in handy during battles. Nal then went to the Lex Luthor Bunker on Shelley Island with Alex Danvers to retrieve the Bottle. The two were then faced by Otis Graves and Lillian Luthor until the headaches caused by the satellites started, overwhelming the two. However, J'onzz and M'orzz were able to destroy all the satellites at once and allow Alex Danvers to electrify Graves' neck, allowing them to take the Bottle from them.[25]

Nal and the Super Friends fight Lex Luthor

Nal then arrived at the Fortress of Solitude and fought Lex Luthor, who was quickly defeated when Alex Danvers released the energy from the Bottle. However, Supergirl was hit with the Phantom Zone Projector and trapped in the Phantom Zone.[25]

Nal then returned to the Tower and reconciled with Dox, who promised Nal no more secrets and explained the reason he worked with Lex. At night, Nal went to CatCo Plaza and covered Kara's disappearance as going to Cat Grant for a special interview.[25]

    Nal expanding her powers
β€œ She's the one I've been looking for. I just didn't realize it. And now that I've connected with her, she is going to teach me to use my powers in all new ways. So, it turns out that my potential is beyond my wildest dreams. ”
    β€” Nia Nal[src]

A year later, Nal had fallen asleep at NC Jitters and was dreaming of a Hooded Figure. She then saw Iris West-Allen being killed in the dream and decided to go to Central City to get Iris's help in understanding its meaning.[7]

Nal found West-Allen in her office at Central City Citizen Media. Not long after Nal's arrival, the two fell into The Dreaming where Nal is an officer and West-Allen is the captain of the Central City Police Department. Then later on they are seen working at CC Jitters as a barista and manager, respectively.[7]

Later, they appear back at CCC Media, West-Allen having realized the visions were meant to reaffirm the career path she has taken. Nal comes to the realization that she doesn't have to fear the ominous dream anymore, so Nal goes through another door one last time. As Dreamer, Nal then confronts The Hooded Figure who is revealed as the Original Dreamer. Nal and West-Allen then wake up at S.T.A.R. Labs, having been relocated there by Iris' husband Barry Allen after he found the two unconscious. Later on, Nal and Team Flash have a conversation, Nal and Cecile Horton still sensing the Original Dreamer's presence. After that, Nal hugs West-Allen before leaving and tells her she'll see her at brunch again next month.[7]
