Batman is a 1989 film based on the DC Comics character, Batman, and the first film in the Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology. It premiered on June 19, 1989, in Westwood, Los Angeles and on June 23, 1989, in the United States.
The film stars Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Pat Hingle, Billy Dee Williams, Michael Gough, and Jack Palance, and is directed by Tim Burton with screenplay by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren and story by the former. However, due to the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, Hamm dropped out of the film while Skaaren did rewrites, with uncredited additional drafts done by Charles McKeown and Jonathan Gems. Three sequels, titled Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, were released in 1992, 1995 and 1997 respectively. The latter two sequels were later to have been retconned to take place on a parallel universe.
