Superman Returns is a 2006 film based on the DC Comics character, Superman, and the sixth and final film in Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology. It premiered on June 21, 2006, in Los Angeles and on June 28, 2006, in the United States.
The film stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, with James Marsden, Frank Langella, and Parker Posey, and is directed by Bryan Singer with screenplay by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, and story by Singer, Dougherty and Harris.
While Superman Returns ignores the events of Superman III, Supergirl and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, the film itself takes place in Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology. Additionally, Routh later reprised his role as Superman in the Arrowverse 2019 annual crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, establishing the franchise to take place on Earth-96.
