Do you know what it’s like to be so filled up with anger that you feel like you’re poisoning yourself? Do you? I want to hit something – anything – all of the time, every second. You think I like that? I hate feeling this way.
    — Rick Tyler to Yolanda Montez[src]

Rick Tyler is a student at Blue Valley High School and the son of Rex and Wendi Tyler.

At a young age, Tyler's parents were murdered by Solomon Grundy shortly after bringing Tyler to his uncle's residence. For years, Tyler has used the name of Rick Harris and lived in Blue Valley as Matt Harris' legal son until Courtney Whitmore discovered his identity as Hourman's son.

Initially reluctant to joining the new Justice Society of America, Tyler eventually accepted his parents' death and spared Solomon Grundy, officially taking up the mantle of Hourman. However, under the illusion of Eclipso, Tyler thought his uncle was Grundy and was tricked into thinking Grundy murdered a young girl. Tyler's violent actions eventually placed him under arrest, while his hourglass was destroyed out of rage.

With the help of Pat Dugan, Tyler was released from prison and attempted to repair the hourglass using his father's notes. The attempts were all unsuccessful and urged Tyler to participate in the battle, even without possessing any superhuman abilities. Eclipso was admired by his bravery and prepared to kill him before Grundy tackled Eclipso on the ground and rescued Tyler. Unfortunately, Grundy was killed by Eclipso's Moon Magic and was buried in the woods of Blue Valley, shortly after the JSA destroyed The Devil in the Shadows. Tyler was soon approached by The Shade at the burial and was told about Grundy's possible survival.

    Early Life

Rick Tyler was born in either late 2004 or 2005 to Wendi and Rex Tyler. After the final battle between the Justice Society and the Injustice Society, his father took it upon himself to hunt down the Injustice Society, eventually purchasing a house in West Farms, Blue Valley which the family moved into.

The Tyler family says their goodbyes

They lived together there until one night in 2011 when Rex and Wendi planned to leave after Rex found out that the Injustice Society had discovered their location and was coming after them. The pair said their final goodbyes and Rex gave Tyler a toy 1966 mustang, stating that he must take care of it until he gets back as it was special just like him. Tyler's uncle, Matt Harris, then arrived at the home and was told that there is paperwork inside stating that he owned the house and that Tyler was legally his son under the name, "Rick Harris". Rex and Wendi then drove away into the forest, where they were killed in a car crash by Solomon Grundy.[2]

    Blue Valley High School

The trauma, combined with Harris' abusive treatment due to the resentment of raising a child he never wanted, resulted in Tyler becoming a delinquent with an extremely short temper. As a teenager, Tyler began to attend Blue Valley High School where he sat at the "losers table", stole school property, frequently received detention and began to skip school to drink alcohol. He also began to repair his father's 66' Mustang.[2]

What do you understand? My parents hit a tree and they died. What grand plan of God's was that?
It wasn't God's plan, Rick. It was an accident.
Then who do I blame, huh?
