    August Cartwright (Earth-1: Pre-Crisis)

August Cartwright[6] is the former kidnapper of Beth Kane and the father of Jonathan Cartwright. After faking his death, he assumed the identity of Ethan Campbell.[7]

    Biography[edit | hide | hide all]

    Early Life[edit | hide]

At some point, August Cartwright was born to Mabel Cartwright.[4]

    The Caterpillar[edit | hide]

In 2003, she kidnapped Beth Kane after a car accident and took the head of Beth's mother.[4]

In 2004, on Beth's birthday, Cartwright told her to make a wish, but she accidentally said it out loud and Cartwright told her that saying it out loud won't make it happen.[1]

Days later, Cartwright discovered that Beth has a secret kitten and ruthlessly killed him in front of her and Johnny. He then noticed how great was done the sweater for the kitten, and he asked Beth about it, but since she did not answer, he destroyed a copy of "Alice in Wonderland (Earth-1: Pre-Crisis)|Alice in Wonderland]]". After Beth screamed at him and told him that her father would kill him, Cartwright spitefully told her that he had already forgotten about her and showed her an article about Jacob's marriage with Catherine Hamilton. He then asked again Beth about the sweater and, after she admitted that she was the one to have done it, Cartwright started to teach her how to create masks of skin grafts.[1]

At some point, after making Beth "Alice", he welcomed his mother, who had to live with him since her health has worsened. After a chat with his children's, Cartwright told Mabel that he will find a way to fix her.[4]

In 2011, after taking the identity of Dr. Ethan Campbell, he started to do plastic surgery and had to fix the face of Duela Dent who had scars near her mouth.[2]

In 2013, Cartwright went into the cabin in the backyard and found Alice staring at an opened fridge with her real mother's head. She claimed that she was looking for ice cream before telling him that Mabel hated her because she was young and beautiful while she was ugly and old. This angered Cartwright, who punched Alice. Days later, after his mother's insistence, he would give her Gabi Kane's earrings.[4]

Months later, Alice and Johnny managed to breakout of the house after causing an accident that made them believe that he died.[4] While secretly he survived and resumed his activity as Ethan Campbell.[2]

    Testifying Against Mouse[edit | hide]

In 2020, Mary Hamilton, a former student of his, came to Cartwright (under the Campbell identity) to testify for the trial of Jacob Kane by proving that the murderer was Jonathan Cartwright posing as her step-father with a mask made of skin grafts. Cartwright pretended that this wasn't a possibility and that it may be something too much close to science fiction, and suggested that Mary was still traumatized because of the murder before walking away.[6]

Weeks later, as Dr. Campbell, he would accept and meet Jacob Kane in Prison where they show some evidence about the skin crafted masked Mary talked about. Cartwright pretended to be surprised and told them if there is a way that he could meet this "Mouse" person. After meeting his son, he then revealed his identity and tried to reconnect with him and ask questions about Beth, but since he refused, he drugged him and tied him up inside a warehouse after sneaking him out of the hospital. Later, he would find "Beth" and shot her with a sniper, believing to have killed Alice.[7]

A week later, as Dr. Campbell, he testified and proved Kane's innocence during his trial.[8]

The following week, Sophie Moore went to visit him and talked to him about the fact that the recent women who got attacked may be from someone that has scars on her face and Cartwright told her that eight years ago, he did a plastic surgery on a Duela Dent who had similar scars. Later, while her was about to leave his desk, he was surprised to see Duela present at his door. But he would discover that it was in fact Alice in disguise and got knocked out. Later, at Alice's lair, his mask would be dropped and when Alice asked where was "Mouse," he answered that he will tell her where to find him with a smile.[2]

    Death[edit | hide]

Alice then contacted Kate with the Bat-signal and dropped Cartwright unconscious there so that she could find him. Later, he would wake up at the The Hold Up tied to a chair. He was interrogated by Jacob and Kate about the whereabouts of Alice and Johnny, but he decided they asked him about the story of "Mommy Dearest" that was on the note Alice left. He revealed that he has locked mouse away with fear toxin from the Scarecrow. He deduced that Johnny discovered that his greatest fear was Alice and that at this time he may have tied her with the fear toxin. He also revealed that the fear toxin could psychologically reverse Alice's sanity, but they have to act fast because if they are too late, the consequences would not be repairable. After that, Jacob went to find Alice, Cartwright told Kate about her mother's earrings that he found on her decapitated head. This caused Kate to angrily choke him to death. Despite Jacob's arrival, he couldn't save him.[4]

Later, Jacob buried his body somewhere nobody would find him. Later again, after Alice's arrest, Jacob moved Cartwright's body in order to assure that Alice won't use that information against them.[9]
