I have turned one hundred thousand worlds to dust looking for Anti-Life. Looking for those who robbed me of my glory. I will stride across their bones and bask in the glow of Anti-Life. And all of existence shall be mine.
    — Darkseid[src]

Lord Darkseid, born as Uxas,[6] is the despotic ruler of Apokolips. He is obsessed with harnessing the power of the Anti-Life Equation, so he can rule the multiverse.

    Biography[edit | hide | hide all]

    Early Life[edit | hide]

Uxas was born millennia ago to Heggra on the planet Apokolips in a realm known only as the Dark Place. As he grew, he became obsessed with discovering the location of the Anti-Life Equation, a mathematical formula which grants its user the power to rule the multiverse.[3]

    Invasion of Earth-1[edit | hide]

    Invasion of Earth-1

In around 3000 B.C., Uxas finally discovered the location of the Anti-Life Equation on the Earth of Earth-1, and so he invaded the planet with the intent of terraforming it into a copy of Apokolips using the Mother Boxes. As he jumped from his ship, the impact on the ground soon revealed to him that the Anti-Life Equation was indeed on Earth, and so his army of Parademons and nine Apokoliptian witches soon followed him to the planet's surface.

As the witches began the Unity, a battle ensued between the Apokoliptians and an army composed of Humans, Atlanteans, Amazons, Olympians, and Green Lantern Yalan Gur. During the battle, Uxas fought and killed Gur, attempting to take his ring as it flew off his hand, though he was prevented from doing so after being hit in the chest by two arrows fired by Artemis. He was then attacked by King Atlan and Zeus in quick succession, which weakened him enough for Ares to grievously injure him with his labrys. Defeated, he was carried back to his ship by a group of Parademons and the armada quickly fled Earth, leaving behind the Anti-Life Equation and the Mother Boxes.[3]

    Apokoliptian Civil War[edit | hide]

Following the disastrous invasion of Earth, Uxas nearly died on his injuries, and the defeat eventually plunged Apokolips into a civil war. During this, his uncle Steppenwolf sided against him, though he eventually switched sides and slaughtered his former allies. For this, Uxas showed mercy on him and decided to exile him until he had conquered fifty-thousand worlds rather than having him executed. Following the civil war, Uxas was proclaimed Lord Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips.[3][7]

    Lord of Apokolips[edit | hide]

Following his ascension to the throne, Darkseid began a search for the Anti-Life Equation that spanned thousands of years and countless planets across the multiverse.[3] To effectuate his conquests, Darkseid moved Apokolips across the stars in each universe until it collided with each Earth and corrupted the people living there into his servants.[8] During his reign, Darkseid also had a son named Orion, who was raised by another person that believed in spreading light rather than darkness across the multiverse,[9] and fought the Superman of Earth-38A.[5]

    Corruption of Earth-167[edit | hide]

    Early Attempts[edit | hide]

Darkseid appeared on the Earth of Earth-167 several times throughout its history, becoming known by many names, including Hades, Lucifer, and Kali.[1] He almost succeeded in conquering the planet at several points, such as during the Spanish Inquisition and the rule of the Third Reich, though a brighter force always arose to send the darkness back.[10] During an attempted invasion of this Earth, Orion created a bow, which he used to defeat Darkseid and drive him back to his own dimension. However, Darkseid left behind DeSaad and Granny Goodness as his prophets to continue attempting to corrupt humanity.[9]

    Return to Earth[edit | hide]

    Return to Earth

Following the activation of a portal to send the Kandorians to New Krypton, a tear in the universe was created, which allowed Darkseid's non-physical form to return to Earth.[2] Soon after arrival, the darkness broke into Gordon Godfrey's recording studio and possessed him, leading to him becoming a celebrity and one of the leading voices in the anti-vigilante movement.[11] At some point during his time on Earth-167, Darkseid also visited other places within the galaxy, such as the Phantom Zone, and corrupted its people.[12]

    Search for a New Vessel[edit | hide]

    Possessing Gordon Godfrey

Three weeks after making Godfrey his vessel, Darkseid again possessed him in an attempt to corrupt Lois Lane's soul, but he was unable to due to her pure heart. Instead, he decided to place her on a deadly rope trap in an attempt to lure The Blur to him so that he could use him as a vessel. Upon Clark's arrival at Maxwell's, Darkseid saw the inner conflict within him and almost succeeded in possessing him, though he was prevented from doing so by Kara using her bracelet.[11] Some time later, Darkseid appeared in his true form to Lionel Luthor, as he was at Lex's tombstone,[13] and offered to make him immortal, though Lionel refused.[14]

Enslavement of Oliver Queen[edit | hide]

After discovering his soul had become corrupted, Oliver Queen set out to find the Bow of Orion, as it was supposedly the one thing capable of reversing his condition. However, the weapon was soon destroyed by Granny Goodness, who revealed that Darkseid had allowed him to discover its location for this reason. She then used her powers to mind control Oliver into finding gold kryptonite in order to remove Clark's superpowers, as her master had instructed.[9] However, this plan soon failed after Chloe Sullivan prevented Clark from putting on a ring made of the substance.[1]

    Facing Superman[edit | hide]

    Possessing Lionel Luthor

As Apokolips was moving closer towards Earth, Darkseid appeared before a dying Lionel Luthor and asked him if he wanted to reconsider his earlier offer of immortality, though he once again refused and asked instead that Darkseid allow his son to live. He agreed to this, on the condition that Lionel's soul now belonged to him, and then ripped out Lionel's heart and placed it inside the clone of Lex.

Now using Lionel's corpse as his vessel, Darkseid travelled to the Kent Farm, where he taunted Clark about how easily humanity fell to him. After throwing him across the barn, Clark had a brief mental conversation with Jor-El before developing the power of flight, quickly flying into Lionel's body and seemingly destroying Darkseid in the process. After accepting his destiny as Superman, Clark then flew into the sky and pushed Apokolips away from Earth, finally ending the threat to his universe.[14]

    The Crisis[edit | hide]

Instead of being destroyed by his previous encounter with Superman, Darkseid was instead simply banished from Earth-167 and still continued his conquest of other universes throughout the multiverse, including Earth-Omega, whose Earth was destroyed after colliding with Apokolips.[15] However, Darkseid was soon disheartened to discover that the Monitors had already conquered this world before him.

    New Genesis

As Darkseid stood among the rubble, he was approached by Superman and Lois after they were accidentally transported to Earth-Omega. He had a brief conversation with Superman in which he stated that there is only one version of himself in the multiverse, that he had only been beaten in their prior encounter due to not being at his full strength, and that he was beaten to conquering this universe by the Monitors. Superman then offered him a deal, where he would help them get on board one of the Monitors' ships in exchange for the crystal of knowledge from Earth-Majestic.

Accepting this agreement, Darkseid fired his omega beams at the ship, which opened its side door so that Superman and Lois could get inside before it entered the Bleed. Following this, Darkseid threw the crystal he had just acquired into the distance, and it began to form a Fortress of Solitude which he called a "New Genesis".[8]

Second Invasion of Earth-1[edit | hide]

    Steppenwolf's Defeat

As the Superman of Earth-1 was dying, his screams reverberated across the planet and resulted in the reawakening of the Mother Boxes after being dormant for millennia. This alerted Steppenwolf to their location, and so he began to collect them, soon releasing that this Earth was also home to the Anti-Life Equation. Reporting this discovery to Darkseid, he was ordered to terraform the planet in preparation for his arrival. During a confrontation with the Justice League, Steppenwolf managed to initiate the Unity, but this was undone after The Flash reversed time. As a portal to Apokolips began to open, Steppenwolf was decapitated by Wonder Woman and his head came tumbling through it, being stopped by Darkseid crushing it beneath his boot. Undeterred by this setback, Darkseid ordered DeSaad to prepare an armada to invade the Earth.[3]

    Knightmare[edit | hide]

    Knightmare

In a possible future, Darkseid arrived on Earth and soon claimed the Anti-Life Equation for himself. He then began the process of conquering the planet, first killing Wonder Woman and conquering Themyscira during her funeral, then attacking Atlantis, impaling Aquaman in the heart with his own trident and incinerating Nuidis Vulko with his omega beams, and finally incinerating Lois Lane in the Batcave.[3] After her murder, Superman became corrupted by the Anti-Life Equation and began to blame Batman for not saving her life.[16] As a result, Superman became a servant of Darkseid and was given control over the Earth. He was then tasked with destroying the Insurgency started by Batman, which he soon did.[17]
