“ | She was convinced, this memory was so embedded in her heart there was no way it could ever be extracted. But could she ever truly be sure? Could she ever truly guarantee she and her beloved's bond would never be broken? Turns out, when you have a time machine of indeterminate function, the answer is, in fact, yes. Rita would have her vengeance. | ” |

Shipley is a time machine created by the Brotherhood of Evil to acquire Niles Caulder's secrets from the future.
History[edit | hide | hide all]
Bootstrap Paradox[edit | hide]
In 1917, while observing the Bureau of Normalcy from afar, the the Brain saw Rita Farr arriving from 2021 in Shipley. Inspired by the machine, the the Brain spent the next three decades working on a design to steal Niles Caulder's secrets from the future.[1]
In 1949, the Brain and Monsieur Mallah sent Laura De Mille, Madame Rouge, to 2021 and achieve their long-expected mission. Unbeknownst to them, the time machine has a side effect of inducing amnesia, making De Mille abandon his mission and befriending the Doom Patrol, Caulder's subjects.[2][3]
In 2021, after an encounter with the Sisterhood of Dada, Rita Farr hijacked Shipley and travelled back to 1917, becoming the inspiration for the machine she travelled in. This resulted in a casual loop, better known as a bootstrap paradox.[1]
1917 vs. 2021[edit | hide]
After living a life in 1917, where Farr became a member of the Sisterhood of Dada and De Mille's betrayal, Farr decided to return to 1917 and seek vengeance on De Mille, hoping to avenge the death of Malcolm DuPont. However, before he returned to the point where she left, Farr made a detour to Codsville Mountain Resort and locked her past self in the site of her murder, ensuring that her past self would be able to meet DuPont's deceased soul and subsequently meeting 1917's DuPont.[2][4]
Doomed Patrol[edit | hide]
After taking down the Brain and making amends with De Mille, Farr led the Doom Patrol, temporarily dubbed the Doom Force, into vigilantism. Despite the team's consensus that they were rushing into it, they continued their journey to become heroes and began their first mission together.[5]
Into the Future[edit | hide]
While on their way to meet Cliff Steele's grandson, Shipley encountered obstacles in the Timestream and was thrust into 2042. In 2042, they were told that the world had become the wasteland of the Were-Butts, a result of their previous encounters. As they being attacked by an army of Were-Butts, the Doom Patrol promised to prevent the Butt-Pocalypse from happening, and returned to 2022. Unfortunately, Shipley was severely damaged in the return journey, with the Doom Patrol no longer able to Time Travel until repairs were completed.[6]
Overview[edit | hide]
Functions[edit | hide]
- Time Travel: Shipley can travel across the Timestream by drilling into the ground, sending its users across space and time.[3]
Drawbacks[edit | hide]
- Amnesia: With each time jump, Shipley's passengers will lose their memory of their lives upon arrival in a new time period. However, when reversing the jump back to the proper time period, the passenger can retain the memories of their lives in both time periods. Additionally, the Doom Patrol discovered that putting jellyfish on their head during the time jump can allow them to retain their memories.[1][2][6]
