We have hospitals who treat the mentally ill with compassion... but that's not where you're going. I've arranged for you to get a transfer to Arkham Asylum in Gotham. I still have some friends there. They're expecting you.

The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane,[1] simply known as Arkham Asylum, is a psychiatric asylum that was founded by Amadeus Arkham and is located in Somerset, Gotham City.

    History[edit | hide | hide all]

    Foundation[edit | hide]

The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane was founded by Amadeus Arkham in the early 20th century who converted it from a family estate.[1]

Assault on Arkham Asylum[edit | hide]

At some point, the Joker was captured by Batman and imprisoned in Arkham Asylum where he would eventually become the patient of psychiatrist Harley Quinn. He would gradually manipulate her into falling in love with him until handing her a machine gun which allowed him to start a riot.

His gang overran the asylum, killed the guards and set him free which left it in disarray until it was restored at some point before 2016.[2]

Imprisonment of Lex Luthor[edit | hide]

Lex Luthor was found mentally unfit to stand trial for the crimes of mass murder and the framing and death of Superman and was sent to Belle Reve to await his sentence.

Batman was furious that Lex had manipulated him into almost killing Superman, and so he had him transferred to Arkham Asylum, so he could make sure that he wouldn't cause any more trouble.[3]

He remained imprisoned in Arkham for a year until he learned of the resurrection of Superman and the founding of the Justice League at which point he broke out unnoticed. He then met Deathstroke to discuss the formation of a team to counter the Justice League.[4]
