Superman, re-released as Superman: The Movie, is a 1978 film based on the DC Comics character, Superman, and the first film in Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology. It premiered on December 10, 1978, at the Kennedy Center, on December 14, 1978, in the United Kingdom and on December 15, 1978, in the United States.
The film stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas, and is directed by Richard Donner with screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman and Robert Benton, and story by Puzo. Three sequels and a standalone sequel, titled "Superman II", "Superman III", "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" and "Superman Returns", were released in 1980, 1983, 1987 and 2006 respectively.
Facing the destruction of their home planet Krypton, Jor-El pleads with the Kryptonian Science Council to take his suggestion seriously. When denied, he and Lara are left with no choice but to send their newborn son, Kal-El, to Earth. Kal escapes Krypton as it explodes, arriving on Earth several months later. He grows up as a normal human child on Kent Farm with his adoptive parents, who name him Clark. When Jonathan Kent suddenly dies during Clark's teenage years, Clark discovers Kryptonite that his father had left in his escape pod. He leaves his widowed mother behind, journeying to the Fortress of Solitude, where he discovers his past. Taking up a life as a reporter at the Daily Planet in Metropolis, he soon becomes involved in a criminal conspiracy endangering the lives of many. Under the mantle of Superman, Kal ventures to stop Lex Luthor's plan, saving the life of his love along the way.
