“ | I made a horrible mistake. But I am so much stronger now. We, you and me, we are so much stronger now. But you know what? This guy... even then, he knew that you were the one. A lot of years have passed since then. But that feeling, knowing that you're the only woman that I will ever love... Lana, that has never changed. Not one bit. | ” |

Fire Chief Kyle Cushing is the fire chief of the Smallville Fire Department who used to struggle with alcoholism. Cushing is also the ex-husband of Lana Lang and the father of Sarah Cortez and Sophie Cushing.
When Morgan Edge planned to exploit Smallville, Cushing welcomed him with open arms, believing it could bring good to the town that suffered for decades. Unfortunately, Cushing's judgement was wrong and Edge used his trust to eradicate him, making him a host of a Kryptonian. He was eventually restored and reconciled with his family, becoming the person they once admired and loved.
The peaceful life of the family did not last for a long period, however, as the residents of Smallville blamed them for Edge's actions. Despite them forgiving the Cushings after their efforts in the Battle of Smallville, Cushing secretly had a short affair with Tonya Martinez which once again broken the family.
