Biography[edit | hide | hide all]
Early Life[edit | hide]
William Dey was born to an unnamed man and woman in Cochin, India.[1][2]
When he was a kid, Dey's father always made different kinds of pastries such as muffins, scones and pies on Sunday mornings. Dey enjoyed them and later attempted to recreate them after his father's death. However, his determination to create it completely resulted in the opposite. He soon realized that he was being too technical and refocused on the ingredients as opposed to the process. Eventually, he was able to recreate his beloved father's pastries.[3]
Working as a reporter in London, Dey once dressed up as a pizza delivery guy in order to "bluff his way" into 10 Downing Street to interview the Prime Minister. However, he failed, and he was left with a dozen of pizza with extra cheese.[4] At some point, Dey also went undercover in multiple countries, including Kasnia, where he spent days uncovering the story of the "BX gas scandal". Dey later served as a war correspondent and became an expert hand-to-hand combatant in the process.[3]
Moving to National City[edit | hide]
At some point, Dey's best friend, Russell Rogers, refused an offer from Lex Luthor and mysteriously died. He then moved to National City to expose the truth of Luthor. Dey soon applied for a job at CatCo Worldwide Media in order to get closer to Lena Luthor, only for Andrea Rojas to take over the position of owner upon his arrival.[5]
Investigation of Lex Luthor[edit | hide]
Toyman Fiasco[edit | hide]
In January 2020, Dey and Kara Danvers were assigned to report a toy convention where they ran into Lex Luthor. Dey questioned Luthor about the possible murder of his friend, with the latter asking for a private conversation with Kara Danvers.[5] Dey later found photos of Luthor paying off security guards at Fort Harrison and shared them with Danvers, who agreed to work with him against the villain. Afterward, Danvers invited him to her apartment for a game night with her friends.[6]
On the next day, Dey was invited to karaoke night and acknowledged Danvers' favorite song to be "Africa". Alex convinced the two to sing the song together before Kara was forced to leave due to an emergency, with her sister telling Dey that their grandmother was sick in order to hide her identity as Supergirl a secret. After Toyman caused a temporary blackout in the city, Dey continued to work and gifted Danvers' grandmother a puzzle to feel better. He also asked Danvers out, who politely refused and Dey emphasized that they are no hard feelings.[7]
Obsidian Platinum[edit | hide]
Days later, Dey brought coffee to Danvers and Nia Nal before work. Rojas assigned Dey on the opening of Obsidian Platinum despite her recent incident. Dey followed Rojas to the convention and talked to Supergirl about Danvers, whom he admired and was unaware of her identity as Supergirl.[8] The two also had a date at Al's Dive Bar afterward.[9]
Suspicious about the technology, Dey and Kelly Olsen investigated the 50 users who were unresponsive and were all in the same location. Dey bravely entered the building, only to find nothing as Leviathan camouflaged the bodies and the technology from his naked eye.[10]
Eve[edit | hide]
The next day, Dey and Olsen investigated the manifesto left behind after Lex allegedly rescued the victims from Margot Morrison. They discovered that it was Eve Tessmacher wearing an Image Inducer and recorded the video. He brought their findings to Rojas, who refused to accept it as it would delay her launch.[11]
Dey later followed Tessmacher to an alley and was kidnapped. He was confronted at gunpoint by Tessmacher and was able to find out Luthor was holding Tessmacher's mother hostage. Dey failed to convince Tessmacher that he would be able to expose Luthor to the world, with her shooting him immediately afterward. The Super Friends arrived and incapacitated Tessmacher, with Supergirl using her heat vision to cauterize Dey's gun wounds on his shoulder. Despite the pain and risk, Dey asked if Danvers was safe. Lena Luthor assured her survival and safety while Dey was brought to treatment.[12]
The Final Trial[edit | hide]
After recovering from the incident, Dey returned to work and was surprised about the survival of CatCo despite Obsidian North's negative status. Rojas revealed that her father "bought" the shares and the company was saved. Dey later asked Nal about Danvers being missing, with her using "pursuing a story" as a cover for her false imprisonment in the Phantom Zone.[13]
Weeks later, Dey and Nal were assigned to the trial of Lex Luthor. However, due to the exceptional security at the courthouse, neither of them were able to enter and were forced to watch it at the office. Despite having clear evidence and witnesses, Lex Luthor was acquitted and Dey started to be frustrated. Nal comforted him, only for Dey to walk away in silence and rage.[14]
Danvers' Return[edit | hide]
Following Danvers' return to National City, Dey assured that he understood her sudden disappearance and reminded her about him being undercover months prior. Rojas later assigned Dey about the Garbage Island caused by Lex Luthor's mismanagement of the DEO despite the story originally proposed by Kara. Dey was forced to accept the task but unfortunately, his contacts at Luthor Corp refused to answer his questions and he was unable to blame the climate disaster on Luthor as he hired a third-party clean-up company. Eventually, Rojas secretly infiltrated the Luthor Mansion and found a more interesting topic to write about: the lives of the Super Friends.[15]
Life of the Super Friends[edit | hide]
“ | Well, you can't disclose the location of the Tower, and you can't ID the Super Friends or even try to learn their identities. Not even my sister Kara knows. If you do, I'll wipe your mind. |
” |
J'onn took Dey to the Tower where he met the Super Friends. Dey, unaware that Kara and Nia are Supergirl and Dreamer, meet him too. Dey was told to not give out the Tower location or ID the Super Friends or else J'onn would wipe his memory if he dares to.[3]
