“ | My dad was running from his pain, but I was running, too, toward everything that didn't want me. A military academy, a private army, my own father. I spent fifteen years searching for a place I fit, and I think I've finally found it. Some see fear, others hope. I see the freedom to be myself, to play by my own rules. | ” |

- David Nutter was supposed to direct the episode, but stepped down for personal reasons and was replaced by Marcos Siega. He did, however, serve as an executive producer for the episode.[2]
- "Twinkle twinkle little bat, how I wonder where you're at" can be seen etched on the wall at the Burnside Orphanage. This is a reference to the lullaby Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and the disappearance of Batman.
- Mary referred to herself as the Meredith Grey of Sherwood Forest, which is a reference to both Grey's Anatomy and the tales of Robin Hood.
- The film that was playing in Robinson Park was The Mark of Zorro, which is notable for being the film in the comics that the Wayne family watched before Thomas and Martha's murder.
- Newspaper clippings in the Batcave contain references to minor Batman villains, Maxie Zeus and Penny Plunderer.
